AI Meets Real cover: How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT search needs OAI-SearchBot allowed; Claude uses Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User; Google's AI features use normal Google Search signals.
  • Assistants cite pages that answer the question directly, with dated facts, clear structure and a consistent company identity.
  • Third-party mentions, reviews and directory listings matter as much as your own website.
  • No one can guarantee a citation; measure monthly with fixed test prompts and AI referral traffic.

To be recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI answers, your website must be open to their crawlers, your pages must answer real questions directly with dated, sourced facts, and other trusted sites must mention your business under the same name and details. ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, Claude on Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode on normal Google Search. Nobody can guarantee a citation, but you can make your business the easiest one to cite.

This matters most in markets where AI is mainstream. In the UAE, 70.1% of the working-age population used AI tools in the first quarter of 2026, the highest rate in the world (Gulf News).

How do AI assistants decide what to cite?

Each assistant searches an index, reads the top pages and writes an answer, linking some of its sources. Your page can only be chosen if it is in that index and if it answers the question better than the alternatives.

AssistantHow it finds pagesWhat you must allow
ChatGPT searchOpenAI's own search crawler plus search partnersOAI-SearchBot (search), ChatGPT-User (fetches pages users ask about), GPTBot (training, optional) (OpenAI)
ClaudeClaude-SearchBot indexes for search; Claude-User fetches pages for a userClaude-SearchBot, Claude-User; ClaudeBot (training, optional) (Anthropic)
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGoogle's normal indexGooglebot; no special markup needed (Google)
PerplexityIts own indexPerplexityBot (Perplexity)
Microsoft CopilotBing's indexBingbot; IndexNow speeds up discovery (IndexNow)

OpenAI notes that sites which block OAI-SearchBot will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links (OpenAI).

What technical setup do you need?

Check these on your own site this week:

  1. robots.txt allows the crawlers above. Many sites block AI bots by accident through a security plugin or CDN setting.
  2. Pages are readable without JavaScript. Some AI crawlers do not run JavaScript; if your content only appears after scripts run, they see an empty page. Prerendered or server-rendered pages are safest.
  3. Sitemaps list every page with an accurate last-modified date, and are submitted in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  4. Structured data describes your organisation (name, logo, contact, area served) and your FAQs and articles. Google says it must match what is visible on the page (Google).
  5. IndexNow pings Bing and others when a page changes.
  6. An llms.txt file summarising your company and key pages is optional, but cheap to keep.

What kind of content gets cited?

Assistants quote passages that answer one question cleanly. Write for that:

  • Answer first. The first two or three sentences of a page answer its title question directly.
  • Question headings. Phrase sections the way customers ask: "How much does X cost in Dubai?"
  • Specifics. Prices, timelines, steps and names, not adjectives.
  • Dated, sourced facts. Link every figure to its original source and show when the page was last updated.
  • Tables and lists for comparisons, steps and prices.
  • An FAQ block with the five questions customers actually ask.
  • Selection content. "How to choose", "X versus Y" and cost guides match the questions buyers put to assistants. See our own guide to choosing an AI automation company.

Why do third-party mentions matter so much?

Assistants are cautious about recommending businesses on the business's word alone. They look for corroboration:

  • Google Business Profile with accurate details and real reviews.
  • Directories and marketplaces relevant to your sector.
  • Press and industry media that mention you by name.
  • Partner and client websites that link to you.
  • Consistent details everywhere: the same company name, phone, address and description. Small differences make it harder to connect the mentions.

What is entity consistency and how do you fix it?

Your "entity" is how machines recognise your business across the web. Pick one exact name, one phone number, one address line, one short description and one logo, and use them on your website, social profiles, Google Business Profile, directories and press releases. Link your social profiles from your website, and your website from each profile.

How do you measure AI visibility?

There is no single ranking report yet, so combine four signals:

  1. Referral traffic in analytics from chatgpt.com, claude.ai, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
  2. Bing Webmaster Tools AI performance data, where available for your site.
  3. A fixed set of 20 test prompts asked every month in each assistant, recording whether you are named or linked.
  4. Leads that mention AI assistants as how they found you. Add the option to your contact form.

What should a UAE business do in the next 30 days?

  • Fix robots.txt, sitemaps and structured data.
  • Rewrite your five most important pages to answer first, with question headings and an FAQ.
  • Publish one sourced article a week on the questions your customers ask.
  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile; ask your last ten happy clients for reviews.
  • Make your name, phone and description identical everywhere.
  • Add Arabic versions of your key pages if your customers search in Arabic.

Which pages on your own site matter most for AI answers?

AI assistants answer questions such as "who does X in Dubai, and what does it cost?". The pages that answer those questions directly tend to be used most:

  • An about page with the company's legal name, location, founding facts and what it does, written the same way everywhere.
  • Service pages that say plainly what you offer, for whom, and in which emirates.
  • A pricing page with real numbers or clear ranges. Assistants cannot quote a price you never published. Our own pricing page and cost guide follow this rule.
  • FAQ sections with one clear question and answer each.
  • Dated guides that answer the questions your buyers ask, with sources.

Keep these pages up to date and add an "updated" date when facts change.

What is the next step?

We build AI systems, and we apply the same discipline to our own site. If you want your expertise to be easy for assistants to cite, contact us or book a demo to see how our CMS publishes answer-first articles with sources, FAQs and structured data built in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT or Claude?

No. As of October 2026 there is no way to buy organic citations in ChatGPT or Claude answers. You earn them by being crawlable, clear, accurate and mentioned by trusted sources.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. Google says no special files are needed for its AI features, but some assistants and tools read llms.txt, and it is cheap to keep. It does not replace good pages.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?

No. GPTBot is for model training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot; if you block OAI-SearchBot your pages will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

Crawling and indexing can take days to weeks after a page is published, and authority builds over months. Track progress monthly.
